Bird Alphabet S is for Sula Bassana
Sula Bassana Birds - Atlantic gannet; French: Fou de Bassan; German: Basstölpel; Spanish: Alcatraz Atlántico.
Exclusively in the north Atlantic, where breeds on both sides 46–72° north. More widespread on eastern side, where in winter also enters the Mediterranean Sea and disperses south to subtropical waters. On western side, breeds on islands off Newfoundland and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Canada) and disperses south in winter to the Gulf of Mexico.
Strictly marine, mainly in waters over the continental shelf. Breeds on cliffs on offshore islands or, more rarely, on mainland.
Breeds in dense colonies where aggressiveness and intense social behavior have given way to complex repertoire of stereo-typed displays. Breeding birds acquire a nest-site, which they then defend against intruders and maintain from year to year. Pair behavior is equally complex and linked to the nest-site. At sea, often occurs in groups particularly congregating around rich feeding sources but with little interaction.

About the artist, Yong Chen:
In China, Yong Chen grew up in a village with a strong cultural and artistic tradition. He have been drawing and painting nearly every day since he was four years old.
As a young adult, he explored different forms of art. I was a violinist, a song-writer and a passionate young poet. Yong found that, whether the final product was a poem, a song or a picture, the creative process was the same. Each was a means for him to express the emotions he feels through the relationship of people to nature.
Yong Chen is a children's book illustrator/author. His published children's books include: Finding Joy, Miz Fannie Mae's Fine New Easter Hat, Starfish Summer, Swimming with Sharks, his watercolor illustrations also appeared in Spider Magazine, Cricket Magazine and AppleSeeds Magazine. Yong Chen is also a watercolor portrait painter and college instructor for watercolor painting and portraiture painting.
