Work to the face

How to paint a watercolor portrait painting from live, demonstrated by Yong Chen

After I worked on the overall value and color composition, now the time to go back to the face details.

I hope that some of us won't get the impression, which it is ok to keep putting colors layer by layers, especially to the face. Once the watercolor paper absorbs the wrong color pigment, it is not easy to wash it away. In this case, I protected the flash-tone color of the face. I first shaped the face parts with Burnt Umber with red. And glazed a mix of red with clean water for the cheeks.

Beside opaque white, black is another color I generally don't put onto my palette, since a mixture color from Burnt Sienna and blue will make a much richer dark color then a black from the tube.
