my first watercolor painting experience: watercolor painting by Youngsun Kim, a proud student of Yong Chen

Youngsun Kim's watercolor learning experience:
My first experience of painting house was an exciting experience. Significantly, I learned that painting was about a communication and an expression of my emotions. Painting also has a character. Each person has its own painting styles and expressions. In order for me to paint the first house, I had to put all my heart and effort into it. As I was concentrating on the painting, I felt more focused and comfortable.

First, I carefully observed Mr. Chen’s example of house painting, and then I tried to follow all the steps as much as possible; however, as a beginner, I had to improve a couple of things. In fact, the redundancy of using brush needed to be improved. Additionally, the reflection of lighting had to be added into my painting. I learned that lighting and its reflection allowed the painting to be more real.

Second, I fixed the redundancy of brush by using lift-off technique which I learned from Mr. Chen. Surprisingly, the lift-off technique permitted me to have flexibility on my painting. However, regardless of its usefulness, the technique was not so easy to do because removing the previous paint could weaken the paper. Anyway, I corrected my first house painting very carefully. Although I need to practice overtime for mastering this technique, I was able to create the revised painting. Adding the shadow of reflection of light on my second painting gave the painting more vibrancy. Moreover, mixing various colors was a lot of fun.

In conclusion, I enjoyed my first experience of painting the house. I tasted the sweet of creating art and also satisfied that I was able to complete it and move one step forward. Learning process also was so valuable for me. I am looking forward to creating the beauty of water color art further.
