Watercolor Demo: Painting a Lemon - Defining Details

With the number 14 round brush, I mix yellow and blue for a green color. This is the base color for the lemon navel, and I will work on the details later after it's dried. Now I mix a dark color, and paint into the area right under the lemon in the cast shadow. Then I use the 3 quarter inch flat brush to mix a brown color and paint into the end-part of lemon on the left.

Next, I will perform a lifting-off for the reflecting light on the left. I clean my brush, and squeeze off most water from the brush. Then I lay the dry brush and move it gently. The brush now absorbs some paint from the paper, and create a feel of the reflecting light from the table top. By controlling the pressure of the brush while performing the lifting-off, you can create a vary effect.

Next, I will apply a wash to further develop the cast shadow. Looking at the photo image, you can see the yellow color of the lemon has affected the color of the cast shadow.
